FOREWORD
This Foreword is compiled and edited from original versions penned by Otto H. Elmer. Links to scanned copies of the original documents can be found at the end.
This record of the ancestors and descendants of Jakob Elmer (No. 184) was made possible through the help and cooperation of many of his descendants who supplied information about their own families. The record of the ancestral line of Jakob Elmer back to about the year 1500 was obtained from the Archive of Glarus with the invaluable help of Mrs. Klari Ramseier of Bern, Switzerland. Information concerning members of the Elmer family in the history of Switzerland from 1289 to 1846 is from the researches of both Dr. Manuel C. Elmer[1], retired Professor of Psychology, University of Pittsburg University and of the writer made in Switzerland in 1946. We give our sincere thanks to all who gave help by supplying information that was so essential in assembling this record.
Many people in America have the surname Elmer and undoubtedly we have the same ancestors. Since written records of births, marriages and deaths began in 1595, relationship can however not be determined when their and our common ancestors lived before any records were kept.
This record is fairly complete to 1964 for the families of Jakob and Ursula Elmer's son Jakob Jr and it is also fairly complete for the five of the eight children of their son Peter. We have, however, thus far been unable to learn about the families of Peter's daughters Mary, Ursula and Rosina. Also nothing has been learned about Barbara, Marie and Ursula, the three daughters of Jakob and Ursula Elmer. We will welcome any information any one can give us about these members of our family.

Footnotes:
[1] - Dr. Manuel Conrad Elmer's (1886-1988) ancestors moved from Elm to the villiage of Matt, Switzerland in about 1600, and then to New Glarus in the United States in the late 1840s. He is presumably a cousin whose line is yet to be connected. You can download a copy of his 1987 book entitled, "Rudy's Hill," in PDF file format, by clicking here. A copy of his obituary can be viewed on page 16 of the document found here.
